Tring Market Auctions take part in skydive in a bid to raise money for the Hope for Hollie Campaign!

10 August 2010

On Saturday 14th August Karen Hearn, Office Manager, Tring Market Auctions, will join a team of brave individuals at Hinton Airfield in Brackley, Northants to take part in a tandem skydive to raise money for the Hope for Hollie Campaign.

Hope for Hollie was launched by the parents of five year old Hollie Carter who was diagnosed in July 2007 at the age of two with a rare and fatal disease called Niemann-Pick type C, sometimes referred to as childhood alzheimers due to the similarity of the disease. Hollie's parents were told that anytime from the age of two Hollie would begin to regress; that she would lose the ability to talk, walk, eat and do all of the things that she had learned in the first years of her life. She would also develop dementia.

Five year old Hollie Carter

The chances of Hollie surviving into adulthood are remote with her brain already beginning to show signs of damage. There is currently no treatment or cure for this disease of which there are 74 known sufferers in the UK and 1000 worldwide.

Hope for Hollie was launched to raise awareness of Niemann-Pick disease and to help aid the fantastic work that the Niemann Pick Disease Group (UK) do to support families affected by this devastating terminal illness. The charity is extremely small and needs vital funds to help support families affected by the disease and to contribute to vital research into treatment or cure.

The tandem skydive in August is being organised by Sarah Gale and her colleague Stef Ward. Sarah is a close friend of Hollie's family and both Steff and Sarah will be taking part in the challenge themselves. Originally, it was Sarah and Stef daring to take part in the event but as word spread more and more people wanted to join in and show their support.

Hollie's Mum, Helen Carter said, 'We have been overwhelmed and extremely touched by the support we have had from not only friends and colleagues but also from people we have never met, all of whom have agreed to jump out of a plane in aid of our campaign Jumping out of a plane at 10,000 feet is a tremendously brave thing to do and we can't thank all of them enough for taking part. We would also like to thank the many people who have sponsored this event so far.'

Karen Hearn, Tring Market Auctions, said: 'The families affected by Niemann-Pick disease are so dedicated to doing all they can to raise awareness and vital funds for research. I am privileged to take part in this event and support this amazing cause.'
